Marriage & Homeownership Trends

Marriage and Homeownership by 30 Are Nearly Gone!

For most of the last century, two things defined the American Dream: getting married and owning a home. They weren’t just milestones, they were the foundation of middle class life, creating stability, opportunity and a sense of belonging. But today, that foundation is in freefall.

A new chart paints the picture in stark detail. In 1960, more than half of all 30 year olds in the U.S. were both married and homeowners. Fast forward to today and that number has plummeted to below 15%. By 2025, it’s projected to sink even lower. The sharp decline is not just about delayed marriages or rising home prices, it’s a sign that the pillars holding up society itself are cracking.

Housing costs have skyrocketed, education has become a debt trap and the price of everyday living keeps climbing. At the same time, mass immigration, stagnant wages and political decisions that seem to prioritize global elites over working Americans have only made matters worse. For young people, the dream of owning a home and starting a family feels less like a right of passage and more like a fantasy.

Even Elon Musk reacted to the chart with nothing but “!!”, a shorthand for alarm that many share. Commentators warn that when people lose faith in the Dream, they don’t just give up on houses and families, they often turn to radical alternatives. Some believe that’s why socialist and Marxist ideas are gaining traction among younger generations, filling the void left by the collapse of economic opportunity.

Back in the 1960s, communism never gained serious ground in America because workers had stable jobs, growing wages and affordable paths to homeownership. Today, those conditions are gone and without a drastic shift, it’s hard to see how the next generation rebuilds what’s been lost.

Interesting trend for sure and I’d say this chart doesn’t just measure marriage and mortgages, iit measures the health of the American middle class and right now that health is on life support.
